(News Release from the City of Show Low)

COVID-19 RELIEF DRIVE FOR WHITE MOUNTAIN APACHE TRIBE IS JUNE 11

Donations to be used to help WMAT community members in need

The City of Show Low, Navajo County and the Town of Pinetop-Lakeside are partnering to help our neighbors living on the White Mountain Apache Reservation who have been under lockdown several weekends in a row due to COVID-19 and are in need of cleaning supplies and food boxes. The City and the Town will have donation sites set up on Thursday, June 11, from 8 to 11 a.m., at Show Low City Hall, 180 N. 9th Street in Show Low, and Blue Ridge High School, 1200 W. White Mountain Blvd. in Lakeside. For those who are unable to drop off on Thursday, Show Low City Hall will also accept donations Monday through Wednesday, June 8 through 10, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Items needed include bleach, cleaning supplies, hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes, gloves, hand soap or liquid soap, masks or cloth masks, trash bags, bottled water, paper products (paper towels and toilet paper), mop heads/mops, brooms, rags, laundry soap, baby diapers, dustpans, Gatorade and food boxes. We ask our citizens to consider donating any of the items on the list to help our good friends on the White Mountain Apache Reservation.

As adjacent jurisdictions, we have always appreciated having a warm, friendly and cooperative relationship with the White Mountain Apache Tribe, and we look forward to continuing our mutually successful partnerships. All items collected at both locations will be distributed to our neighbors in need on the White Mountain Apache Reservation. For more information, call (928) 532-4000.

SHOW LOW’S JULY 4th PARADE AND FREEDOMFEST CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19

Enhanced fireworks show will go on as planned

Due to ongoing efforts to combat COVID-19, the City of Show Low made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s popular Fourth of July parade, wet zone and FreedomFest events. Summer weather conditions permitting, the City of Show Low will put on an enhanced fireworks show the evening of July 4.

The fireworks will be lit from their normal location north of Show Low High School and will be visible all around town. There will be no ground display of fireworks or pre-fireworks attractions, such as bands, kids’ zone, or vendors at the high school this year. Please use your best judgement when deciding on a location to watch the fireworks.

The fireworks show, which will last approximately 30 minutes, will begin promptly at 9 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Show Low TV (Sparklight cable channel 56 and 1056), the city’s Facebook page, ShowLowTV.com and on Show Low TV’s YouTube channel for those who would like to enjoy the fireworks show in their homes. We are also working with local radio stations to play patriotic music during the fireworks show for those who are watching from their vehicles.

We encourage the public to safely and responsibly celebrate Independence Day with loved ones and enjoy the fireworks show as we all work to limit the spread of COVID-19. For more information, call (928) 532-4140.

Local Police Response to Arizona Curfew

Police Officer Darrin Lee Reed, Show Low Police Department, Arizona

(From the Show Low Police Department Facebook Page)

“Governor Doug Ducey today issued a statewide Declaration of Emergency, including putting in place a curfew starting at 8:00 p.m. tonight. The curfew is in effect each day from 8:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. and shall expire on Monday, June 8, at 5:00 a.m. unless further extended.

While Show Low Police Department fully supports and understands this order, we also understand the community’s concern. The Governor’s Order is intended to keep the peace, and to protect life and property. It’s not intended to interfere with everyday activities, and allows people to shop, go out to eat, go to church, seek medical help, etc. Show Low is fortunate not to have experienced the civil unrest seen in other parts of the state, but the Governor’s Order is meant to address a wide spread and rapidly changing situation. As always, Show Low Police stands with our community during these trying times.”

(From the Pinetop-Lakeside Police Department Facebook Page)

“Governor Ducey has issued an emergency order for a curfew for the State of Arizona between the hours of 8:00 pm and 5:00 am, beginning Sunday, May 31st and expiring at 5 am on Monday, June 8th.

This state emergency order gives authority to the Pinetop-Lakeside Police Department to enforce the curfew, HOWEVER We won’t enforce this order because it does not require any business to close since private business operators and their customers are exempt from any travel restriction, but persons travelling to and from a private business are still subject to the ban on assembly at a public place or on a public street .
The community of Pinetop-Lakeside, thankfully has had no issues with riots, fights, fires, etc., however, If issues do arise, the Pinetop-Lakeside PD has been given the authority to enforce the curfew.
Please stay safe and thank you for your cooperation.”

Trump warns North Carolina governor the clock’s ticking on a GOP convention guarantee

Trump sets his terms in feud with Dem governor over who gets to host GOP convention

“President Trump warned on Tuesday that North Carolina’s governor has ‘a week’ to figure out if the Republicans’ presidential nominating convention can be held in Charlotte this summer, as other states offered to hold the gathering instead.

But Gov. Roy Cooper says he’s waiting for the Republican National Committee ‘to present to us in writing their proposals’ on how they plan to hold their presidential convention amid the coronavirus pandemic before he can guarantee that the August convention can be held at ‘full attendance’ as demanded by the president.

Cooper, a Democrat, spoke the day after the president threatened to move the massive quadrennial event from North Carolina if Cooper couldn’t ‘immediately’ tell convention planners whether or not the downtown arena in Charlotte ‘will be allowed to be fully occupied.’ And he spoke hours after the Republican governors of Georgia and Florida offered their states up as the site to host the convention if Trump follows through on his threat to move the confab.

Hours after Cooper made his comments during a daily coronavirus news conference, the president said ‘we don’t have much time’ and that ‘we need a fast decision from the governor.’

‘I would say within a week, certainly we’d have to know. And if he can’t do it, if he feels he can’t do it, all he has to do is tell us and then we’ll pick another location, and I will tell you, a lot of locations want it,’ Trump added as he answered a question from Fox News’ White House correspondent John Roberts.”
