Arizona school board members urge Gov. Ducey delay opening schools until October

“PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — School board members from across the state were joined by medical professionals Monday urging Gov. Doug Ducey to put off opening schools until at least October.

The group says more than 100 school board members signed off on the letter, in addition to about 1,000 healthcare workers and education advocates. They spoke outside the state capital before delivering the letter to the governor’s office.

‘If you open schools this fall and we see an increase in infections and death, you will have the blood of our students, our teachers, and their families on your hands,’ said Lindsay Love with the governing board for Chandler Unified School District.

The letter the board members signed off on, had the following demands:

  • Statewide closure of buildings and classrooms until October 1, or the date on district academic calendars that marks the end of the first quarter of instruction.
  • In October, districts may consider reopening buildings and classrooms for in-person learning when we meet agreed-upon levels of COVID-19 data points that show a reduction of risk and infection in our communities.
  • In October, districts may reopen buildings and classrooms when we meet agreed-upon safety protocols and requirements, as determined by the Center for Disease Control and the Arizona Department of Health.
  • Fund distance learning at the same level as in-person instruction without the requirement to also provide face-to-face classes five days a week.
  • Provide clarity and assurance that every school receive 100% of their prior year funding through the Enrollment Stability Grant, despite the COVID-19 specific related expenses we may incur.
  • Waive the 180 instructional day requirement for the school year 2020-2021.
  • Suspend the statewide standardized assessment, AzM2, for school year 2020-2021 and allow districts to use local assessments to track academic progress for accountability purposes.
  • Ask the Arizona Department of Education to submit an extension or new waiver for the USDA school lunch program so schools can offer ‘to-go’ meals to students even when campuses are closed.

As it stands, districts can begin offering in-person instruction on August 17, but some teachers have argued it’s not safe to be in class with kids amid the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in Arizona. Some districts have plans to go completely virtual while others plan to have a mix of online learning and in-person instruction.

‘If there’s one thing this pandemic has shown us is that it has highlighted the inequities that have existed for decades in communities of color,’ said Devin del Palacio, governing board member for Tolleson Union High School District. ‘Many of our students live in generational family homes where they have grandparents, aunts and uncles living there, and it would be devastating to get a whole unit ill.’

The letter for Ducey also calls for increased funding for districts to support online learning with equipment and internet access.

Physicians spoke at the capital insisting students and their families must be protected.

‘This state chose not to think of them as they went to barbeques and parties or to the bars on Mill Avenue and they’re certainly not thinking of them now as they demand that they return to school,’ said Dr. Dionne Mills, an obstetrician and gynecologist.”

Primary Election in Show Low

“SHOW LOW, Ariz. (July 13, 2020) – Registered voters in the City of Show Low are reminded of the primary election on August 4 for three council seats and the mayor’s seat. Voters may select up to three of six candidates for council member—including Jon Adams, Melody Bell, Ray Duran, Jack Latham, Dawn V. Wilson and incumbent council member Connie Kakavas. Voters may vote for one of two candidates running for the mayor’s seat — Gene Kelley and John Leech, Jr.

Show Low voters may vote at either of two locations—city campus gym at 620 E. McNeil or Timber Mesa Fire and Medical District at 3561 E. Deuce of Clubs (beyond the airport across from the National Guard Armory). Or voters may request an early ballot be mailed to them by calling Navajo County at (800) 668-3867 no later than Friday, July 24. The city’s election is combined with federal, state and county elections and will appear at the end or near the end of the ballot.

All registered voters can vote in the election, whether they have designated a party preference or have declared themselves to be “independents” or “no party.” A voter who has a designated political party (Republican, Democrat or Libertarian) will receive that party’s ballot. Because Arizona is an Open Primary state, voters registered as “independents” or “no party” may select a Republican, Democrat or No Party ballot (which will show only the City Council race). The Open Primary option is available either by early ballot or at the polling place.

For voters with early ballots, the last suggested date to mail back a voted ballot is Monday, July 27, to ensure it is received by Navajo County by the August 4 deadline. Or voters may drop off a voted ballot at the Show Low Health Department at 550 N. 9th Place in the ballot drop box or at any ballot drop box location within Navajo County or at any polling place in Navajo County on election day. All polling places will be open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.

For more information, call the city clerk’s office at (928) 532-4061 or (928) 532-4060.”

(PRESS RELEASE FROM THE CITY OF SHOW LOW)

“SHOW LOW, Ariz. (July 1, 2020) – On June 28, the City Council held a special meeting to discuss issuing an emergency proclamation to provide clarity regarding requirements for businesses and face coverings. After listening to opinions expressed by several residents and after lengthy discussion, the City Council voted unanimously to approve a motion allowing Mayor Daryl Seymore to issue an emergency proclamation. The proclamation asks all businesses to follow the requirements for businesses, including restaurants and bars, as outlined by the Executive Orders of the Governor.

All businesses are required to follow the requirements of public health officials, limit large gatherings on their premises, and mitigate the potential for transmission by sanitizing their place of business. Restaurants and bars are required to have their employees wear face coverings when interacting with the public. In addition, businesses have the right to implement stricter requirements than what was ordered by the Governor. Businesses are encouraged to promote the use of pick-up services and drive-through services and should require social distancing or wearing of face coverings if social distancing cannot be maintained. City staff will disseminate information to businesses in reference to the Governor’s orders to educate them regarding the requirements and measures to be taken to follow these orders.

The emergency proclamation issued by the Mayor, which took effect on Wednesday, July 1, provides exceptions for when face coverings are not required, for example, those who cannot wear one due to a medical or mental health condition or developmental disability, children under six years of age, restaurant patrons while dining, or for anyone who has trouble breathing or is otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. Citizens are asked to respect others’ decisions regarding wearing face coverings.

We ask that everyone continue to follow social distancing guidelines, wash and sanitize your hands regularly, avoid touching your face, and stay home if you are sick. If we are vigilant, we can slow and contain the spread of COVID-19. We ask all to make the effort to follow the requirements put in place by the Governor’s order, for which further clarification can be found at https://azgovernor.gov/governor/news/2020/06/governor-ducey-announces-enhanced-covid-19-action-plan.”
